This video, recorded in October 2025 in a Kindergarten classroom, illustrates a sounds-first approach to explicit phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. The lesson focuses on segmenting and blending one-syllable words with short vowels through a chaining activity in which one sound is either removed, added or substituted to form a new word. With explicit teacher modeling and immediate guided feedback, students review the properties of vowel and consonant sounds and then engage in a word chaining activity using the previously taught 18 consonant sounds and 5 short vowel sounds. The video shows the first 8 minutes of Lesson 9 in Unit 5 of the Kindergarten Appleseeds Curriculum. The learning objectives, aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts and Literacy, include: • RF.K.3b: Observe the position of the mouth while making the short vowel sounds /i/, /e/, /a/, and /o/, and associate each sound with its spelling • RF.K.1b: Demonstrate understanding that a systematic, predictable relationship exists between written letters and spoken sounds by producing 'a' for /a/, 'm' for /m/, 't' for /t/, 'd' for /d/, 'o' for /o/, 'c' for /k/, 'g' for /g/, 'i' for /i/, 'n' for /n/, 'h' for /h/, 's' for /s/, 'f' for /f/, 'v' for /v/, 'z' for /z/, 'p' for /p/, 'b' for /b/, 'l' for /l/, 'r' for /r/, 'u' for /u/, 'w' for /w/, 'j' for /j/, and 'y' for /y/ • RF.K.3b. Read, spell and/or write chains of one-syllable short vowel words in which one sound is added, substituted, or omitted.
