Two months ago, another elephant calf arrived at HESC. We were approached to assist with the baby elephant that had been found wandering on its own, in the Imfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It was a female, approximately two months old, with no herd in sight. Wildlife vet Dr Dave Cooper fetched the calf, and took her to Megan at Zululand Rhino Orphanage, who cared for the little elephant until we could get there. Fortunately she was unharmed, only slightly dehydrated. She was named Raekie, and she is in our care at Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, where she has proven to be excellent company for Mopane, a 14 month old male orphan currently in our care.
