An Irish sea shanty I wrote following my visit to Dingle and the the Blasket Islands. Gather Your Nets To Throw 1 From Dunquin that early morn the men with oars did row To the shoals out near the isle for their nets to throw With Holy water in the bow and prayers offered to God That they'd be blessed to fill their nets with mackerel and cod Hey Ho, Heave Ho, come all ye lads let’s row Hey Ho, Heave Ho, gather your nets to throw 2 So they rowed out to the isle on through the narrow sound With every eye alert to cry out when the fish were found A path of foam lie in their wake as they spied the shoal Their nets cast o’er the starboard side as St Peter once was told 3. They hauled the nets and stowed the catch then began to row Through the sound out to the sea before the tide was low When a Maighdean Mhara on a stoney ledge they saw Her beauty so alluring that each man starred in awe 4. She took the mantle in her hands and slipped beneath a swell To where the maiden disappeared none of them could tell Soon a stormy gale did blow the sea got raging mad They rowed their boats in desperate hope of somehow reaching land 5. Their currachs rose and fell and flexed upon the rising sea Against the wind and rain they rowed unsure where home might be When off the bow they saw the Maiden gesture with her head For them to follow after her whichever way she led 6. They fought the wild and rolling waves and slowly made their way Fearful they’d lose sight of her in the fading of the day When suddenly a light so bright was shining from the shore The Maighdean Mhara turned and smiled and she was seen no more CODA: Now many a night upon the strand a lonely sailor stands And dreams of the day to come when he will take her hand © Rick Pickren, PickrenSongs ASCAP 1/21/26
