(Jazz) Freed Me From Insanity By Organic Swing feat. Kimani Our Tiny Desk Contest 2026 submission this year is a journey to multiple musical summits traversing a musical landscape of pop, jazz, and rap. Our influences are many, and the plateaus we reach are worth the wait. Rather than a historical perspective -- the evolution of jazz is well documented by others -- we take a recumbent trip through genres of the present day, while acknowledging that most western popular music was derived from the blues. Derivation announced at the head, a simple two-chord progression adorned with lyrics of love (for jazz, of course) morphs into a contemporized post-bop piano expedition of deliberate non-functional chord voicings building to an adventurous free-jazz climax. A musical reminder of derivation is bluntly restated with a quote from Art Blakey's Moanin', before returning to our opening 2-chord harmonic theme, soon taken in a new and contrasting direction. A brilliant rap by special guest Kimani chronicles today's challenging social climate, overlayed by love of jazz as a mindful practice, our source of calm and fulfillment in the most trying times of our generation. However temporarily, jazz frees us from insanity. Love the Jazz. Derived from the Blues. ------------ Music by James David Smith Lyrics by Janeen McDonald Rap by Kimani Spruill Produced Collaboratively by Organic Swing: 🎤 Janeen McDonald, Vocals 🎹 James David Smith, Piano & Keyboard Bass 🥁 Mike Hodos, Drums and Percussion 🪘 Victor Garcia, Congas and Percussion 🪈 Brent Harsh, Flute & Keyboard Bass Audio and Video Recorded in Raleigh, North Carolina, Jan 24, 2026. I’ve been looking in the mirror like I don’t recognize myself. I’ve done the books and the therapy, somebody tell me what’s next? they say pressure make diamonds, so I always come out strong but I got opposition dimming my shine all along. Can somebody free us from insanity? Listen up, I’m asking passionately. We’re all faking smiles, about to start handling it candidly. Frustrated with work, so I’m withholding my profanity, I gotta stay the course and get this money for my family. It’s supposed to be a Goodyear, no tires but inflation. Even the sun melts the ice, for siblings worried bout immigration. And its vices everywhere but don’t get caught up in temptation. Cause it’s people screaming pro life, but dont care bout deprivation. I don’t want another vigil, I can’t light another candle. How come everybody under oath gotta be connected to a scandal? I know this a lot, and you know it to be true. Even I almost went insane not knowing what to do. but have some grace with your friends, we all going through it too. And I know you need to vent, but it can’t always be in twos. So when I’m feeling low, I use the Jazz as my tool. First the melody hits my ear, and then the pain becomes my muse. Don’t be scared of the Jazz, it understands you too. { pause} don’t forget that it derived from the blues.
