(Walstad Method Shrimp Jar) In this video, I walk you through the setup of my new pearlweed shrimp jar, which has been running for just under three months without a filter or heater. It’s built using the Walstad Method, relying entirely on natural processes like plant uptake and microbial activity to keep the water clean and safe for shrimp. If you're looking for a low-maintenance, budget-friendly way to get started with shrimp keeping, this setup is a great option. The jar uses topsoil capped with sand to feed fast-growing pearlweed, which handles nutrient export and oxygenation. With no filtration system required and everything inside tolerant of lower temperatures, this makes for a perfect unheated shrimp tank that can thrive even below 18°C (64°F). I cover every step of the process—from adding the soil and substrate layers to choosing the right pearlweed, planting techniques, and tips for cycling a Walstad-style shrimp tank without artificial filtration. Pearlweed is the only plant used here, and while it's sometimes labeled as “advanced,” I’ve found it incredibly easy to grow, especially when adapted from trimmings. By month two, the pearlweed had created a dense carpet, providing shelter and food sources like algae and biofilm. At the start of month three, I trimmed the plants, checked water parameters, and added five cherry shrimp from one of my established tanks. No acclimation was needed due to matching conditions, and the shrimp immediately got to work grazing in their new home. This shrimp jar is now a self-sustaining micro-ecosystem. The shrimp contribute to plant growth by producing waste, which is broken down by bacteria into nutrients that fuel the pearlweed. I’ll supplement their diet with a small amount of high-quality food like Fluval Bug Bites and Hikari shrimp pellets once or twice a week, but most of their needs are met naturally. Whether you’re looking to start your first shrimp tank or experiment with a minimal, low-tech setup, this video will show you how to build a thriving, sustainable environment for cherry shrimp using natural methods.
