Avadon 3: The Warborn - First Impression Review Avadon 3: The Warborn is a turn based fantasy crpg by Spiderweb Software. Jeff Vogel, the main man behind the company has been making games like this since the early 90's. Spiderweb's other rpps include the Avernum and Geneforge series of games. Avadon 3 is the third installment in the Avadon series, and althoguh the games are heavy on the plot and narrative, the official word (and my impression) is that it's not necessary to be familiar with prior titles in order to enjoy Avadon 3: The Warborn. This first impression review is based on a key sent to me by the developer, and is based on about 6 hours of gameplay. It is not intended to be comprehensive, but hopefully it is still informative. Avadon 3: The Warborn - First Impression Review Summary: The story of Avadon is as follows. You are a Hand of Avadon, an agent of Avadon, which is an organization made to protect an alliance of nations called The Pact. You operate outside of the law, and take your orders directly from Avadon. There's a war going on between the Pact, and the Farlanders. You may act in the best interests of your people, or you may betray them. Through speaking with various NPCs, it's established that Hands of Avadon are not always nice people, and the very name of Avadon strikes fear in the hearts of many. The game has a fair bit of moral choice involved where you must balance your loyalties with your desire to do the right thing. Or you can be a patriotic jerk. It's up to you. The combat is a fast paced turn based. Most encounters are simple, but many of them are interesting. Partly because a lot of them are scripted to give them a unique feel. Althought the combat gameplay is not as tactical as a game like X-COM, and the visual aspect doesn't do it any favours it's still pretty fun. The character specialization system is calss based, and allows each class to be played in 3 different ways, or a mix and match of all three. Some of the skills you can use are pretty interesting, although their use in combat is not always necessary. The game has an overall lack of polish. There's no music, the animations are stiff, and the visual effects look very amateur. Despite the strong gameplay, Avadon 3: Warborn fails to compete with contemporary crpgs in the presentation department. The UI design is also rife with flaws, as if usability was no concern. Although I was able to stick it out and found myself enjoying the game, I wouldn't blame anyone for being put off by it.
