Jenny-Wanda Barkmann was born on May 30, 1922, in Hamburg, Germany, during the Weimar Republic era. She was just ten years old when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party rose to power in 1933, a time when Nazi propaganda dominated every aspect of German life. By the time World War II began on September 1, 1939, Barkmann was 17. That same year, the Germans established the Stutthof concentration camp near the town of Stutthof, east of Danzig (modern-day Gdańsk, Poland). The camp, surrounded by barbed wire and guarded watchtowers, was originally built by prisoners themselves. Stutthof became a key part of the Nazi plan to eliminate the Polish elite—intellectuals, clergy, and political leaders—marking the beginning of its transformation into a site of mass suffering and death.
