The goal of IPM is to focus on the non-chemical control methods of pests. TSU Extension Agent Amy Dismukes explains that often the chemical control method may not be needed. First you need to determine what is going on and recognize and correctly identify the insect or disease damage. Just because you see a problem does not mean it needs to be treated. IPM includes cultural control like keeping weeds pulled to deny a hiding place for insects. It also includes mechanical solutions like proper pruning or removing fallen plant material. IPM also includes biological controls like beneficial insects. If an insect infestation is minimal and some beneficials are present, the beneficials will likely take care of the problem. The last approach is the chemical approach when the problem has reached a point where immediate control is necessary. When using chemicals use the most targeted, lowest power insecticide you can.
