Hydronephrosis is swelling of one or both kidneys and is an important pathology of the urinary tract. Hydronephrosis can easily be found in point of care ultrasound. In this video, learn what to look for and how to evaluate hydronephrosis. Martin Altersberger, MD shows you a transverse view of the kidney in point of care ultrasound and where you can see the dilatation renal pelvis and rheumatoid calyces. Based on these findings, the patient would be diagnosed with grade 2 hydronephrosis. However, because the point of care ultrasound also shows a narrowing of the renal parenchyma, this is grade 2 to grade 3 hydronephrosis. Next, you are walked through two more cases of hydronephrosis. In the point of care ultrasound, we see a dilation of the renal pelvis and a dilatation of the rheumatoid calyces with a narrowing of the renal parenchyma.
