Sanders & Morley Candy Makers, Inc. is showcased in this WZZM Grand Rapids Made In Michigan feature. Article by Sarah Sell, WZZM 5:56 p.m. EST February 4, 2015 - CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- With Valentine's Day almost here, it's a busy time for a Michigan chocolate company. Sanders Fine Chocolatiers is located northeast of Detroit, but the products can be found across the country. "Today we have a 72,000 square foot plant and 50,000 square foot distribution center," says Mike Koch, vice president of marketing. The company is a combination of two Michigan brands: Morley Makers, a fundraising company, which purchased Sanders Candies in 2002. When Fred Sanders opened his first candy store in 1875, it featured a soda fountain where customers could get an ice cream soda or a hot fudge sundae. "Our best selling line are our dessert toppings. This is probably the oldest product we make here," says president Ron Rapson. Today, the company still uses many of the same 140-year-old recipes. All of the products can be found at the company's retail store in Clinton Township. "People are constantly coming into our stores and they all have stories, memories of their childhood growing up, coming in for a hot fudge sundae, cream puff sundae," says Koch. The company has since gone national. Most recently it started making bulk containers of sea salt caramels for Costco. Sanders uses many local ingredients and also purchases equipment from other Michigan companies. "Our package supplier is in Kalamazoo. Our fresh fruit is from West Michigan. Local dairy with all our cream," Koch explains. "We just put in a new 180-foot long line made by a company in Grand Rapids." The company has seen double digit growth over the past three years and as it continues to gain popularity across the country, it's proud to still be Made in Michigan.
