We put together this framework of Housing First for young people who experience homelessness to help communities understand that there are meaningful ways to provide young people with the housing and supports they need to help them move into adulthood. The framework lays out the key underlying features of a Housing First framework for youth, and is important because we can't just take Housing First as a term or concept and loosely apply it to whatever we do. It's important to have fidelity to the principles of the approach; it's important to ensure young people have the kinds of supports they need and it's important to ensure they have choice in the kind of housing that they get into. The good news is, is that if we can rely on the kinds of evidence that we have for Housing First for adults and really pursue this and model the approach for young people based on the needs of young people, we have a real opportunity to make a serious impact on youth homelessness and potentially prevent young people who experience homelessness from becoming the chronic adult homeless population of tomorrow.
