The Annual Festival of Nine Lessons with Carols has long been a highlight of our year and it would have been a shame to allow our singers and those who have loyally supported and enjoyed us over the years to go without this year of all years. In September we put together a plan to rehearse and record a service to be broadcast to everyone, then as regulations and restrictions continued to develop it became impossible to meet together at all. Not to be defeated by any of these challenges, we were resolved that the Carol Service would still go ahead - somehow! Since September we have been putting together some rehearsals via online video conferencing and by the beginning of November we were recording some parts separately in our own homes onto little recording devices. Gradually these returned to base and thanks to many hours of editing we have brought our voices together to again unite to produce music this Christmas. At the beginning of December, as restrictions relaxed, we were also able to gather small groups of singers outside in the cool morning air and at a distance to sing along to some carols. Next Wednesday, 23rd December at 7pm, we will join our champion friends in Downshire Brass for their Christmas Concert under their director, Michael Alcorn. This will also be online, so please check our social media about this in the coming days. Although the technology involved to produce the service is modern, the structure still follows the one laid down over 100 years ago for Christmas Eve 1918, by Eric Milner-White who had returned from the battlefields of the Great War. It is familiar throughout the world thanks largely to the annual broadcasts from the Chapel of King’s College in Cambridge. The service provides a time for both choir and congregation, who this year are isolated at home but together in spirit, to reflect on the ‘development of the loving purposes of God...’ seen ’...through the windows and words of the Bible’. The carols and anthems are subservient to the words of scripture providing an opportunity for a response to the texts through traditional and contemporary music. The Bidding Prayer encourages us to reflect with gratitude to God for ‘all those who rejoice with us but on another shore and in a greater light’. The centre of the service is still found by those who ‘go in heart and mind’ and who consent to follow where the story leads. The choir will, in turn, weave carols old and new between the readings. The lessons are read by some of the singers of Grosvenor and although you may be sitting at home, we encourage you all to join with us for the hymns. On behalf of the whole Grosvenor Family, may I wish you a very peaceful Christmas and a healthy New Year.
