In this episode, I take a look at the two years Elvis spent serving in the military, sharing a selection of books which detail this period. Although I give a very brief timeline in the video itself, here's a more detailed one: December 20 1957 - call- up papers received March 24 1958 - Army induction March 25 1958 - GI haircut March 28 1958 - basic training begins at Fort Hood, Texas June 10-11 1958 - recording session at RCA Studio B, Nashville, while on leave Aug 12 1958 - arrives in Memphis after being granted emergency leave due to Gladys being seriously ill Aug 14 1958 - Gladys passes away September 19 1958 - sets sail for Germany October 1 1958 - arrives in Germany March 3-5 1959 - on leave in Munich June 13- 27 1959 - on leave in Paris and Munich July 3-5 1959 - on leave in Paris January 12-17 1960 - on leave in Paris January 20 1960 - promoted to Sergeant March 2 1960 - leaves Germany March 3 1960 - stops off at Prestwick Airport in Scotland March 3 1960 - arrives home in US March 5 1960 - officially discharged from service NB: on the sleeve of 'A Date With Elvis', Elvis isn't pictured at the wheel of a Mercedes, it's his 1958 Lincoln Continental Mark III convertible. The calendar on the sleeve reverse shows the date of March 24th Elvis's release from the army, although it actually happened 3 weeks earlier.
