“Ana Adonai, hoshia na. Ana Adonai, hatzlicha na. Ana Adonai aneinu b’yom koreinu.” A call for salvation, traditionally sung to start each hakafa of dancing with the Torah during Simchat Torah celebrations. This call is timely, not only to the holiday, but to this time of COVID-19 pandemic, economic stress, political upheaval, and social unrest. The arrangement brings together disparate musical elements for a new presentation of familiar themes. A bhangra beat grooves under traditional the Ashkenazi liturgical melody before medleying with a new arrangement of a traditional klezmer tune recorded in 1924 by the great klezmer clarinetist Naftule Brandwein. Typically for Simchat Torah, four Jewish Renewal congregations: Kehilla Community Synagogue, Chochmat Halev, the Aquarian Minyan, and Beyt Tikun come together for an uplifting community celebration with teachings, ecstatic music, and dance. In 2020, due COVID-19 shelter in place, we’ve come together virtually. Musicians from the band recorded parts independently which were stitched together into a virtual ensemble. Kehilla Klezmer Simcha Band, featuring: Julie Batz, voice Ron Cohen, trumpet, piccolo trumpet Whitney Dorman, oboe Shulamit Wise Fairman, voice Sharon Grodin, accordion Sheella Mierson, flute Nelson Max, clarinet Mike Perlmutter, clarinet, sax Julie Saxe-Taller, flute Michael Saxe-Taller, baritone horn Sam Saxe-Taller, trumpet Ilana Sherer, violin Rebecca Spiro, baritone sax Ivan Velev, tapan Aneinu (traditional Simchat Torah liturgy), Der Terkisher Bulgar Tantz (Naftule Brandwein) – arranged by Mike Perlmutter.
