France - Feraud and Ungaro Fashion Shows

(18 Jan 1994) The hot wind of desert romance blew down the Paris catwalk on Tuesday, ruffling the swirling, transparent fabrics of designer Emanuel Ungaro's haut couture collection. Starting with classic creamy suits and long slit tunics over cigarette-legged pants, the show shifted to pastoral floral prints in Impressionist hues and tie-dyed chiffon blouses in smoky colours with gently ruffled cuffs and airy trousers. Dangling headscarves and heavy oriental jewelry gave it all a mystical, exotic flavour. Louis Feraud strengthened his reputation as classic designer with his collection, as well as throwing in a couple of surprises. Bare midriffs were a theme in his designs, as they were more generally this year. Strings of beads added an ethnic flavour to his multicoloured miniskirts, and ultra-short lacy dresses. There was a touch of classic romance in the more formal outfits: silk, Victorian-style suits worn with lacy blouses, and billowing flamenco skirts set off with lace. Skirt lengths varied from the very short to well below the knee. Colours were equally eclectic -- bold mixtures of red, blue, purple, pink and yellow for the jazzier styles, more sober navy-blue, black, and red for more formal wear.
