A performance by UC Berkeley students of the Heiliger Dankgesang from the String Quartet Op. 132. Pre-performance talk by Nicholas Mathew, "Beethoven's Palestrina, Music History, and the New Media of the String Quartet." The events of Beethoven in a New Medium explore, through music and conversation, the range of people and things that conveyed Beethoven's music through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, many of which have been overlooked in our traditional music histories: the commercial mementos and souvenirs that attended the founding of apparently more sober archival institutions such as the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the multiracial singers and instrumentalists who disseminated Beethoven's music through the provinces of central Europe and North America, the experimental keyboard instruments that Beethoven actively responded to, and the early sound reproduction technologies that, in the twentieth century, projected his music into new social spaces. All of this conversation and music-making will take place in the new social spaces of the internet. This event was organized by Nicholas Mathew with support from UC Berkeley Department of Music and is presented by UC Berkeley College of Letters & Science, Division of Arts & Humanities as part of the Beethoven in a New Medium series - events to mark the Beethoven year, uncovering the array of people, technologies, and institutions who made and remade Beethoven's legacy.
