“Little” Fugue in G Minor, BWV 578 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750), arr. Alejandro Loveira Passive Illumination Cornelius Boots (1974 - ) Runion *Jonathan Russell (1979 - ) Chris Farrell, James Aldous, Francesc Campoy, Sarah Knowles Hartglass, bass clarinets BASS CLARINET QUARTETS The bass clarinet quartet is a quite recent ensemble, so we supplement our repertoire with arrangements. Bach’s “Little” Fugue, originally for organ, works extremely well for the full, rich sound of bass clarinets. Cornelius Boots was the bandleader of and composer for the first bass clarinet quartet, Edmund Welles, which performed in the Bay Area. Passive Illumination is a choral piece which shows off the full range and blend of the bass clarinet. Runion was composed by Jon Russell for Edmund Welles. It is inspired by Cornelius Boots’ music, and highlights the driving rhythm and sonic directness of the heavy metal roots of the group. Like a lot of Russell’s music for bass clarinet, it exploits the super-altissimo range of the instrument and encompasses more than 4 octaves. ABOUT THE MUSICIANS We are bass clarinetists from all around the Bay Area who met at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Bass Clarinet Intensive. We wanted to share our love of the bass clarinet and the joys of the bass clarinet quartet with listeners in the area. James plays regularly with Nova Vista Symphony, Redwood Symphony, and Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, in addition to chamber ensembles throughout California. He just recorded ‘The Hollywood Collection Two’ at Warner Studios which will be released later this year. Francesc plays the soprano and bass clarinets. He currently plays with the SF Civic and the Clarinets of San Francisco and has played with the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony and the SF Philharmonic. Chris plays bass clarinet with the Palo Alto Symphony, and clarinet, bass clarinet, and basset horn with a number of chamber ensembles, primarily in the South Bay. Sarah plays B-flat clarinet with Kensington Symphony Orchestra and Ohlone Symphonic Band. She plays primarily contrabass clarinet with Clarinet Fusion, a clarinet choir based in Pleasant Hill. She also occasionally plays with the Diablo Symphony Outreach orchestra, presenting at elementary schools in the East Bay
