Rugged Mongolia is an adventure destination where travellers can experience nomadic culture and vast, untouched landscapes. It is this wilderness about Mongolia, that is so unique. Not to be found anywhere in the world, expect the remote outback deserts of Australia and in Siberia, Russia. (More on those later, more videos to follow) The winter season is an exceptionally beautiful time to see the Mongolia landscape, especially the steppe, the endless expanses of grasslands covered in frost and snow. It was an opportunity to see how the nomadic herders of Mongolia live in their winter homes. The family will transfer before the onset of winter from their summer grazing areas. Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape sprawls along the banks of the Orkhon River in Central Mongolia, some 320 km west from the capital Ulaanbaatar or 4-5 hours from Karakorum by 4x4. Orkhon River itself is the longest river in Mongolia with length of 1,124 kilometres. It originates in Khangai Mountain Range and merges to Selenge River, eventually reaching Lake Baikal. We will cover Lake Baikal, Russia in the next travel series on Russia. The Orkhon valley plays an important role in the history of Mongolia. Near the Orkhon waterfall, also called Ulaan Tsutgalan waterfall, is the remains of the 13th and 14th century Mongol place at Doit Hills, thought to be Ogedei Khan's residence. Hence, why the valley is so significant in Mongolia history. It has a place in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Livestock is the main source of livelihood in Mongolia, so there were animals EVERYWHERE. We start the day with watching a herder come past me with Yaks. Livestock production in Mongolia is crucial for the life of the people and for the economy of the country and provides the basis for 80 percent of exports. In this context, cattle production has particular importance with a population of 3.1 million cattle, of which 610, 100 are yak. I will remember this moment in my life, so a very long time. Total silence in the morning, listen to the herders song. It was the first time, I had heard the Mongolian throat singing.. just beautiful. Next was a few hours drive towards the sand dunes of the Gobi Desert, where we went camel riding at minus 5 plus wind factor of minus 10... then we drove over 4x4 tracks towards Khustain Nuruu National Park. We were lucky, you should just be able to spot some of the uber-rare Dzungarian horses galloping over the grassy knolls and rock-ribbed ridges of the Khustain Nuruu National Park. A magnificent site as we were the only tourists in the NP that day. Next was a long drive back to the concrete jungle of Ulaanbaatar, but we kept on going towards Terelj National Park with its rising peaks and ochre-hued ridges. We drove to Aryabal monastery & Méditation center. The temple is located on the hillside of a mountain covered with larches and granite rock. To reach the temple, you will have to pass a small wooden bridge on which a sign tells: ”the bridge that leads beyond wisdom”. Our final stop was the Chinggis Khaan Statute complex is situated 54 km from Ulaanbaatar City, with the view of beautiful natural scenery on the bank of the Tuul River. It is believed the rule of Mongolia was born in this valley. What a way to end our 4x4 expedition trip to Mongolia. We left Mongolia the following day on the 1.30pm Trans Mongolian train direction Russia. We have the intention of returning to this beautiful country again one day, but next time with our own 4x4 truck from Australia. Thank you all so much for watching! We are full time overlanders from New Zealand. This trip in 2019 thru China, Mongolia and Russia was a research trip to see, if we want to take our vehicle overland, the Nest, from Australia thru Asia, Mongolia and Russia. We intended to be away for 6 months, but 20 months later we were still overlanding in Europe now by vehicle. The COVID 19 is what brought us home to New Zealand. Our vehicle is stored in Australia. We are waiting for the borders to open again.. so in the meantime, we have finally time to process the hours and hours of videos taken on that epic overlanding trip of 20 months thru 36 countries.
