THE owner of Manhattan’s scariest Halloween attraction, Blood Manor, has revealed the wildest reactions to the experience’s biggest jump scares. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Blood Manor has undergone a “major overhaul” for this year’s iteration, owner Jim Lorenzo tells The U.S. Sun. “We want things to be different and unique. The actors change the way they act in the room,” he said. Lorenzo admits the performers, who growl, hiss, groan, and without a doubt terrify the three stories of Blood Manor, are “the greatest actors that you can find in a haunt.” “The actors are 150 percent into it. We give them a tremendous palette to work with: great sounds, great lighting, props, decor. “There are so many things in every room, that when you go through, you don't even realize that they're there, but it just creates that aura around you.” While most brave souls who dare to venture into Blood Manor make it through unscathed, there are a few standout reactions Lorenzo remembers from over the years. Jimmy Fallon and Kevin Hart famously plunged headfirst into the darkness of the Halloween attraction for a viral segment of The Tonight Show in 2016. However, Lorenzo reveals that an unexpected Hall of Fame football player only emerged from the manor by going on all fours. “Jerome Bettis, 'The Bus' from the Pittsburgh Steelers, crawled out on his hands and knees screaming and laughing,” he shares. The most freaked-out attendee of all time “wet their pants, and (went) number two.” For anyone who has crossed Blood Manor off their spooky season bucket list, this reaction should come as no surprise. Working with Abracadabra costume shop, Lorenzo has decked out his all-star cast of homicidal doctors, creepy clowns scaling walls, and, fittingly enough for New York, human-sized rats in some of the best costumes that feel at home on its Broadway Avenue location. "We have a great relationship with (Abracadabra)," Lorenzo says. "That design team along with our design team walked from room to room, and we said: 'What's going to work here?' We have a section that's clowns. So the clowns are still going to be clowns, but they're different.'" Even before they enter, guests are jump-scared by the manor's miscreants as they wait in line, and once inside, they travel through several themed rooms, ranging from The Civil War to a maze of pure darkness. Blood Manor's location was once home to Civil War photographer Matthew Brady, and Lorenzo says that not only did he serve as an inspiration for one of the rooms, but there have also been reports over the years of his ghost appearing within the property. "From what I've been told from a lot of different people, he's still in the building," he reveals. The labyrinth culminates in a three-dimensional section that requires special glasses that augment the stellar black-light art. To top it off, the performers wear “off the charts” makeup that seems to pop out thanks to the special effects.
