Then you might be in denial.Denial is a type of defence mechanism that involves ignoring the reality of the situation in order to avoid anxiety. Defence mechanisms are strategies that we use to cope with distressing feelings. In the case of denial, it can involve not acknowledging reality or denying the consequences of that reality. When we live in a state of denial we will experience short-term consequences like feelings of isolation, anxiety, and sadness. Long-term consequences can include the feeling that we have never worked through our experience, and we may end up feeling perpetually “stuck” in it.
