2023 Nissan Armada | Review & Road Test

I mean, look at it, that’s a lot to talk about. The Armada is Nissan’s biggest SUV and uses body on frame architecture. So you know what that means? This guy is going to be mega capable off-road if you get the 4WD version because it’s got a sturdy truck chassis that can take whatever you throw at it. I’ve driven an Armada in the largest sand dunes in North America and it was formidable. Enough said. The 2nd and 3rd rows fold down for more cargo and the 3rd row if you chose to get back here is decent, but if you’re really doing a ton of traveling while using this row, check out either the Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe as they both offer up more space. One new feature the Armada gets is a one-touch power-folding and recline feature in the 3rd row, but good to note that’s just on the Platinum grade trim level. Interior fit and finish are solid for this price point and the design of it looks great. The seats are comfortable and the placement of where everything feels well set up. Every Armada comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. That’s the largest in this segment and you get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, too. There are some nice soft touchpoints and design elements. Overall, the cabin is a pleasing place to be. The base 2022 Nissan Armada S starts at $48,900. The mid-range SV trim starts at $52,900, and the more premium SL model starts at $56,710. The top Platinum model starts at $65,300. On all four trims, 4-wheel drive is a $3,000 option. A destination fee of $1,595 applies to all Armada models. The Armada is priced lower than its similarly equipped rivals. The Armada definitely drives like a truck, so you’re not going to have as smooth a ride as you will in other crossovers that ride on a unibody architecture. The great thing about the Armada is a thundering V8 under the hood. It makes 400 horsepower 413 lb ft of torque, and you feel that all power pretty immediately and those are class-leading numbers. Great feeling. Where that feeling is less comfortable is at the gas pump. (graphic: 14/19 mpg (RWD), 13/18 mpg (4WD)). Those numbers are especially rough when you get the Armada in it’s optional 4WD set up. When it comes to handling, the Armada isn’t as agile as some of the other large crossovers in the segment, but chances are you’re not buying the Armada for it’s refined road manners and high-performance dynamics. You will get 9.1-inches of ground clearance, however, which can come in very handy. It can also tow up to 8,500 lbs. The Nissan Armada still looks fresh from its facelift for the previous model year. It wears a variation of the new design language for Nissan SUVs, and it has a resemblance to the recently redesigned Pathfinder and Rogue. It’s a look that works well on a full-size SUV, and the body is boxy with a few curves to keep things interesting. The light signature on the back has a premium appearance while still looking rugged. The generous list of standard features is part of what makes the Nissan Armada a good value. The base S model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, tow hitch receiver, power-adjustable front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, two front and two rear USB ports, and a power-adjustable steering column. The Armada also comes standard with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 safety tech suite, including forward and reverse automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and rear cross-traffic alert. Other standard features include a driver attention alert and adaptive cruise control. Upgrading to the mid-range SV trim adds nice features like tinted rear glass, roof rails, more body-color exterior trim, a wireless charging pad, leatherette seats, heated front seats, 6-speaker audio, and a trailer brake controller. The SL trim makes the Armada a more premium SUV by adding 20-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lamps, leather seating and door trim, memory driver’s seat and steering wheel, remote start, power liftgate, 120-volt power outlet, power moonroof, Bose 13-speaker premium audio, trailer sway control, and a 360-degree camera. The 2022 Nissan Armada is the biggest, most capable, and most luxurious SUV in Nissan’s lineup.
