Every year since 2010 The Learning Network has invited teenagers around the world to add The New York Times to their summer reading lists and, so far, over 60,000 have. Participating is easy: Every week, we invite students to choose an article, photo, video, podcast, or graphic in The Times that has sparked their interest and to tell us why. At the end of the week, judges from the newsroom pick their favorite responses, and we publish them. Over the years, teachers, students and parents have told us that the contest is a great way to honor student “voice and choice,” show them that the news is relevant to their lives and support their independent reading and writing skills. In this webinar, Learning Network editors are joined by Karen Gold, a teacher from The Governor’s Academy in Massachusetts who regularly assigns the contest, and an enthusiastic student participant from her 2019 class. Together we will share strategies for helping teenagers: Find themselves and their interests in the news Read actively Craft excellent short reader responses, with inspiration from previous teen winners Write with voice and verve For the resource list mentioned in the webinar, click here: https://on24static.akamaized.net/even... .
