Phugtal Monastery is one of the most popular yet the most isolated destination in Zanskar, Ladakh. The famous trek of Ladakh called Chadar Trek takes people to this Monastery (Gompa) during the winter. However, you can also reach Phugtal monastery doing a trek even during the Summer season. Phugtal Monastery is also said to be the only monastery which can be reached only by walking, vehicles do not reach here as there are no roads connecting this monastery. Some says this monastery was built in 14th century and some people says it was built during the 15th century by Gangsem Sherap Sampo, a disciple of Gelug founder Tsongkhapa. Although the monastery was constructed in the 14thcentury, it was hidden treasure for many until Hungarian Alexander Csoma de Koros visited the place and stayed between the periods of 1826-27. There are many folklores about this monastery. It is also said that the cave inside which this monastery lies is more than 2500 years old. I did a trek/hike from Purne village to reach this monastery.
