(Fight highlight reel of Kung Fu black sash Michael, known from the Youtube channel Zen-Dragon). As a martial artist competitive fighting represents a small yet important part of my journey. Besides Kung Fu, I have trained Krav Maga for self defense and MMA (no gi grappling, kickboxing and MMA). I have found that Kung Fu definitely works, but the key factor is to pressure test it and not ONLY learn the techniques, but to also learn to fight using them as well. The same can be said for Muay Thai and any other style of combat, without live drilling and sparring, you won't learn to use it in a combative context. There are some techniques in Kung Fu which cannot be performed in combat sports, without fatal consequences. That said there's plenty of techniques including all the kicks, which can be tested and applied in combat sports. The more destructive techniques which target areas such as the eyes, throat and groin are definitely effective, and do not require that much skills to perform (effectively, aesthetically is a different story, Kung Fu as a martial art is often approached with an emphasis on the artistic expression and to beatifully perform these destructive techniques does require skill). However the concept of targetting the groin, eyes and throat, as it's often done in animal style Kung Fu, is both effective devestating and relatively easy. That said if you do not resort to this in sparring, you're unlikely to instinctively do it in a self defense situation. Even if you perform the moves in taolu (Kung Fu forms) it is not the same as doing them in sparring... it is still better to perform the less lethal techniques in full contact sparring or competitive fights, than to rely on lethal techniques without ever pressure testing them due to their lethal. I pressure test as much as I can in sparring, including animal style techniques with restraint, and then strike for the eyes and groin on my Bob dummy, or in shadow boxing/fighting employing visualisation.
