(31 Jan 1997) Indonesian/Nat Hundreds of troops and police are patrolling the Indonesian town of Rengasdengklok on Friday, a day after rioting by thousands of Muslims. Rioting Muslims ransacked churches, banks, shops and cars after a Chinese Christian trader reportedly insulted Islam by complaining about loud evening prayers. Police said the violence was brought under control after three truckloads of troops armed with automatic weapons moved into the town of Rengasdengklok, 30 miles east of the capital Jakarta. Indonesian Muslims armed with stones and sticks came out of mosques and homes after morning prayers on Thursday and went on a rampage. Four churches, dozens of shops, two banks and a Chinese temple were ransacked. The mob also stoned and wrecked 18 cars, setting fire to some of them. The troops set up road blocks on main streets, warning citizens to stay away from the stricken area. The riot apparently was set off by a rumour that a Chinese Christian shopkeeper had complained about the loud prayers at a mosque in the evenings. It was not clear if the trader actually made the remarks. One man who belonged to this church that got torched gave his account of the riots. SOUNDBITE: After the first attack, the crowd went away up into the town. then another group came later, went into the church again and started lighting fires." SUPER CAPTION: Bambang The, Member of Church community Rumours were rampant about the cause of the attack. SOUNDBITE: "The woman that started this incident is not liked, even by the ethnic Chinese community here. She started fighting with the local youth, who were making noise to wake people before the fasting began." SUPER CAPTION: Dadang Muchtar, Local "bupati" (Head of District ) The ethnic-religious riot is the latest in a series of clashes in the past few months between the two communities. Ethnic Chinese, mostly Christian traders, are far wealthier than the vast majority of Muslims in Indonesia. About 90 percent of Indonesia's 200 (m) million people are Muslim. A curfew has been imposed in the area to prevent further outbreaks of violence, Indonesian television reported.
