Weed control is the main cost factor in sugarbeet cultivation. For this reason, alternatives to manual weed removing by hand hoe are needed. Together with the Institute for Sugarbeet Research (IfZ) and other project partners, KWS is testing robotic systems to offer farmers prospects for achieving sustainable weed control in sugar beet cultivation. In the future, robots that remove weeds mechanically or by high-precision spraying could help make organic farming more profitable and reduce the use of crop protection in conventional agriculture.
