Concubanas - Noches de La Habana (1976) [Full Album] In the summer of 1975, Concubanas played four straight nights at Havana's Tropicana Club and something changed. After three albums bridging Cuba and the Congo, the group was hungry for more. Ramon Hernández pushed his trumpet darker. Elena "La Voz" Torres wanted to sing beyond the dance floor — boleros, confessions, 2 AM songs for the Malecón. Marcel Boungou started threading Congolese rumba into Cuban guaguancó during the late-night jams. Producer Alberto Castellanos caught one of those sets and proposed a hybrid: capture the live heat in the studio, keep the tape rolling, leave in the imperfections. "Fuego en la Calle" opens like stepping into a street party — timbales cracking, brass punching, Elena and Ramon trading pregón-coro lines. Then "Cenizas del Malecón" slows everything down: Elena alone with nylon guitar and muted trumpet, delivering what critics called her finest moment. A cigarette-smoke confession on the seawall. "Tambores de Medianoche" is Marcel Boungou's territory — a percussion ritual building from a single conga pulse, chanting in Lingala, no brass or guitar for three minutes until Pascal Bikindou's flute breaks through like dawn. "Miel y Tabaco" brings warmth back with a sweet son cubano carried by Jean-Pierre Dikamona's tres — the Congolese guitarist who taught himself the Cuban instrument from Arsenio Rodríguez records. The centerpiece is "Descarga en el Solar" — five minutes of pure jam. Guest pianist Tito Valdés opens a montuno, Hernández and Bikindou trade solos, and the whole thing ends with the band laughing. They kept the laughter in. "La Noche No Perdona" is the noir chapter — Hernández singing rough-voiced about Havana's darker corners over wah trumpet and suspicious Rhodes chords. "Río Congo, Río Cauto" is the heart of the record. Two rivers, two continents — Dikamona's soukous guitar interlocking with tres, Boungou in Lingala, Elena in Spanish, languages blurring by the chorus. This is what "Concubanas" means. "Sombra de Palmera" cools down into bossa-son twilight, and "Amanecer Habanero" closes it all with a brass fanfare at sunrise.
