Heritage is what belongs to the culture of a particular society that was created in the past and still has historical importance. Notice the term ‘belongs’ here. If something belongs to a culture of a particular society then it must be preserved and as it is an exceptional element that defines that group. Now suppose that respected heritage is destroyed, then what? Then the perpetrator has perpetrated a serious crime and threat to that entire group. Saturday, June 22nd, 2018 marks the demolition of Baqee, the tragedy and crime that affects us every year on the eighth of Shawwal, however the world is yet to know or act upon it. Now for those of who haven’t heard of Baqee. Let’s take a step back and explain what it is and its story. Al-Baqee is a cemetery located in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Its name “Al-Baqee” means a tree garden. It is also known as “Jannat Al-Baqee” due to its sanctity, since in it are buried many of our Prophet’s grandsons, relatives and companions. The first companion buried in Al-Baqee was Uthman Ibn Madhoon who died on the 3rd of Sha’ban in the 3rd year of Hijrah. At that time it was The Prophet ordered certain trees to be chopped, and in the middle he buried his dear companion, placing two stones over the grave. On the following years, the Prophet’s son Ibrahim, who died in infancy, was also buried there. The people of Medina then began to use that site for the burial of their own dead, because the Prophet used to greet those who were buried in Al-Baqee by saying, “Peace be upon you, O abode of the faithful! God willing, we should soon join you. O’ Allah, forgive the fellows of al-Baqee”. The site of the burial ground at al-Baqee was gradually extended. Nearly seven thousand companions of the Holy Prophet were buried there, not to mention our four infallible Imams: Imam Hasan, Imam Ali Al-Sajjad, Imam Muhammad Al-Baqir, and Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq. This holy land became a heritage for all Muslims in the world and it remained one and everything was going well till the year of 1806 AD. During the House of Saud's nineteenth century control over Mecca and Medina, they demolished many of the religious buildings including tombs, mosques and historical landmarks all around the country, in accordance with their doctrine. They were razed to the ground and the valuables were robbed for their decorations and goods. Sadly, from the destroyed, was the Baqee Cemetery.
