Digging deeper to tell untold stories | Alexandra Martin | TEDxAmoskeagMillyard

How can a small artifact or stain in the soil reshape our understanding of history? Historical archaeologist Alexandra Martin, PhD takes us on a journey through New Hampshire’s hidden past, uncovering stories that weren’t recorded in textbooks or historic documents. From Indigenous wigwams to 20th-century Jewish mikveh, she reveals how the discarded and forgotten can become powerful tools for connecting with the lives of everyday people. In this engaging talk, learn how archaeology helps us build a more inclusive and tangible history – and how you too can question whose stories are being told in the history around you. Alexandra Martin, PhD is the archaeologist at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, NH. She conducts archaeological research at the museum’s archaeological sites and is responsible for maintaining the museum’s collection of over one million archaeological artifacts. Martin is also the manager of the museum’s Abenaki Heritage Initiative. She is \ a faculty fellow in the Anthropology department and coordinator of the Native American and Indigenous Studies minor program at the University of New Hampshire. Martin holds a BA in Anthropology from Mount Holyoke College and an MA and PhD in Anthropology and Historical Archaeology from the College of William and Mary. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of archaeology (not counting her first foray into the field as a volunteer in 7th grade). Her work has taken her throughout New England, to the Caribbean, the American Southwest, historic Alabama, and Colonial Williamsburg. Martin has published about her research in Historical Archaeology and Northeast Historical Archaeology, as well as in various regional journals and newsletters. As a board member of the New Hampshire Archeological Society, she also serves as the editor of the society’s publication, The New Hampshire Archeologist. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
