Stressful Landing in Aspen with the Global Express - VLOG #33 - Global Life

Deemed one of the most challenging approaches in North America, and a bragging right in its own, landing in Aspen is a multifaceted challenge. You'll notice a few things in this video 1. We got a GPWS "Caution Terrain" alert. This is because we flew the approach visual to reduce the approach angle and create a more stable profile. On a full IMC approach, hearing this means GET OUT NOW! 2. We had a TA (Traffic Advisory) on final due to an aircraft departing Aspen. As you'll notice, the flow of this airport is dictated by the valley. In one way, out the other! 3. On the approach, we were fully configured (Flaps 30, Gears down) prior to intercepting final approach course. This meant that as we proceeded down on the 6.5 approach angle we didn't have to also fight the airplane to retain VREF. The use of spoilers was also required!
