It is one of the dedicated freight corridors being developed in India to enhance the efficiency of freight transportation. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor spans a total length of approximately 1,856 kilometers, connecting the cities of Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni near Kolkata in West Bengal. The objective of the EDFC project is to create a separate, exclusive rail route for freight transportation, thereby reducing congestion on existing rail networks and improving the speed and reliability of freight movement. The corridor is designed to handle high-capacity freight trains, allowing for the transportation of larger volumes of goods. The EDFC project involves the construction of a new broad-gauge double-track railway line, electrification of the entire route, and installation of modern signaling and communication systems. It will pass through various states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor is expected to significantly benefit industries and businesses by providing faster and more efficient transportation of goods. It will also contribute to the economic development of the regions it passes through by improving connectivity and facilitating trade. The EDFC project is part of a larger initiative called the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project, which includes the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) as well. The completion of both corridors is set to revolutionize freight transportation in India, promoting economic growth and boosting the country's logistics infrastructure.
