Their leaders acted out of a mix of post-colonial guilt, liberal idealism, and treaty obligations. But the social costs soon followed. From crime spikes to parallel societies, and the rise of populist movements across the West, the consequences have been deep and long-lasting. Even countries like Sweden and Australia, once viewed as models of humanitarianism, are now rethinking their stance. Meanwhile, Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, who are all wealthy, culturally aligned with the refugees, and far closer to the source of these crises, opted out. Officially, they took in zero refugees under the UN resettlement framework. Instead, they funded refugee efforts abroad while maintaining tight demographic control at home. Many of these countries operate under the kafala system, where foreign laborers are welcomed but never integrated. Their reasoning is rarely discussed in the West: a deep understanding of how mass resettlement can threaten internal stability, learned from historical flashpoints in Jordan, Lebanon, and Kuwait. The Gulf states chose caution, and in doing so, preserved their national identity and internal order. Today, the results are telling. Europe faces rising antisemitism and attacks on churches in migrant-heavy districts, while the UAE is hosting a thriving Jewish community following the Abraham Accords. Some call the Gulf cold-hearted. Others see long-term strategic thinking.
