Joining a magicians’ club, clown alley, face painting guild, or vent group and going to meetings, getting to know other performers, and attending the national convention is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to book more gigs. Why Thinking Other Performers Are Enemies Makes You a Rookie How many times have you heard someone just starting out say, “I don’t want to share my secrets with other family show pros. They are the competition.”? When you hear that you can almost see a red flashing red light that says “Rookie” above their head. Getting to know and like the other performers in your area is the single biggest step you can take to booking more gigs, having more fun, and having a stable business model. There is enough work in your market to go around. The more quality performers there are the more gigs everyone gets. When you refer quality performers to the gigs you cannot do and your colleagues do the same, the word gets out that hiring a professional entertainer is a good decision and makes events a lot better. When you go to the monthly meetings you can talk about how things are going and the local organization can help handle all those calls from good organizations who need “free gigs” that you simply cannot do. Having fellow performers as friends will make you happier and can help stabilize prices and bookings in your market. Only a rookie would see another performer as an enemy. Three Things You Don’t Want to Hear About Development Your local ring, alley, guild, or whatever you call your group is one key to continued development in your art. Everyone needs to work on development but if we don’t have a specific plan it will never happen. One—You Need to Be Pushed It is too easy to get comfy. You have done a million gigs and know exactly what you are doing. You could do it with your eyes closes…that’s the problem. If we get too comfortable we begin to sleep-walk our way through gigs. The clients may not even notice…yet. When you stop growing you start dying. A local group can keep pushing you to get better at your craft. The meetings, the programs, or just talking to other performers will keep you fresh, keep you motivated, and push you. Two—You Could Be Better We family show pros have strong egos. You have to. If you don’t you’ll never survive. But that means it is easy to think that others in our area have nothing to offer. If we are the “best in town” how can we learn anything from a new performer? Now that you are stopping to think about it you can realize that you can learn a lot from every performer. None of us have all the answers. Being a part of your local group helps you get better. Sometimes sharing with a newer performer helps you figure out exactly what works and why it works. The act of teaching (even informally) helps the teacher way more than the student. Three—There Are Things You Should Already Be Doing Every day there is something gnawing at you that you know you should be doing for your career: learn a new skill, get better at marketing, improve your website, or something. As you participate in your local group you will be reminded and challenged to do more and be better at the things you should be doing already. Sometimes the best part of monthly meetings happens in the informal exchanges before or after the meeting. How Education Can Win the Game of Thrones Do you want to be THE performer that comes to mind before anyone else? Do you want your phone to ring off the hook? You should be the one referring gigs to everyone else because your schedule is already so full. Do you want to me the King (or Queen) of your market? The only way to do that is to learn more. You can be the best performer but if you are not good at marketing you won’t book gigs. You can be a SEO ninja but if you can’t entertain you won’t re-book gigs. The only way you can improve is my learning more. Meeting with local groups and being involved in the state or national organization is the quickest way to learn more. It also is guaranteed. There are a million YouTube channels, PDFs, books, and more. Some work, some are a waste of time and money. But being active in a professional performers’ organization will work every time. You will learn more and have fun doing it.
