Hundreds of federal employees in Seattle rallied Monday against President Donald Trump’s efforts to shrink the size of the federal workforce. The rally to Save Our Civil Service was held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Henry Jackson Federal Building at 915 Second Ave. in downtown Seattle. The action comes as the Trump administration fired more than 10,000 federal workers across several agencies, a plan that has been in the works since the president’s first day in office. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the lead story: https://komonews.com/news/local/feder... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KOMO News on Facebook: / komonews KOMO News on Twitter: / komonews KOMO News on Instagram: / komo4 KOMO News on TikTok: / komo4seattle Subscribe to KOMO on YouTube: / @komonews Watch more top local news stories: • Video For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.komonews.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://komonews.com/watch Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-... The federal job cuts are affecting people across the country, and workers in Seattle were shaken ahead of the Presidents' Day protest to save civil services they say are under attack by the new administration. Rally organizers were joined by employees from the Environmental Protection Agency, who are responsible for ensuring safe drinking water, the Veterans Administration, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Federal Aviation Administration, to name a few. Washington state is no stranger to wildfires. Opponents of the cuts say staff reductions could eliminate workers critical to wildfire protection. The National Federation of Federal Employees filed a lawsuit over the layoffs last week. "They've indicated that they want to get rid of 75% of the federal workforce. And how they're doing it is illegal, and that's why we filed this lawsuit,” said President of the National Federation of Federal Employees, Randy Erwin. Other federal agencies targeted for staff cuts include the Department of Education, Small Business Administration, Department of Energy, Office of Personnel Management, and Consumer Financial Protection. Democratic Sen. Patty Murray condemned the plan in a statement, saying the sweeping layoffs do not address fraud or waste but instead push out high performers and the promising next generation of our federal workforce who won’t be easily replaced. Republican lawmakers argue while it’s sad to lose a job, the debt in this country isn't manageable and is becoming a national security risk. The federal employees at the biggest risk of being laid off are probationary employees -- or recent hires. #komo #komonews #komo4 #komo4news #seattle #seattlenews #washingtonnews #trump #donaldtrump #presidenttrump #federalemployees #thefed #fed #layoffs #doge #elonmusk #musk Lynnanne Nguyen This video and all Sinclair Broadcast Group content archives of local news and sports coverage are available for your use.
