Abe attends parade of Japan's ground forces

(23 Oct 2016) Japan's self-defence forces held a military parade attended by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Asaka training camp in Saitama on Sunday. The event, which is held every three years, featured approximately 4,000 military personnel, 250 military vehicles and 50 aircrafts. This year's parade was joined by the United States army 7th Infantry Division from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state and marines from Okinawa's Futenma air base. In an address to the troops and thousands of spectators at the event, Abe referred to a contentious new security legislation bill that took effect in March saying that Japan and the United States were now able to "come to the aid of each other." The bill, which was passed in 2015, allows Japan to engage in overseas conflicts for reasons other than self-defence.
