From the Amateur Ornithologist album The Haunted Life of Architecture, released May 15, 2026 Written by Daniel Clifford. Arranged by Amateur Ornithologist. Tramping through fields and thickest snow Up to the mill with sledge in tow Me and my dad My frozen hands And up this high we see it all The green and grey touched by snowfall Washed-out pinks skies painted above The hanging moon and winter sun Fear down the hill and burst on rocks The fun undone, the sledge is lost Through damp-faced harm My father's arms Washed-out pinks skies painted above The hanging moon and winter sun Blue as cold, crisp as snow Pink skies above In a week, all was gone By winter sun Washed-out pinks skies painted above The hanging moon and winter sun Blue as cold, crisp as snow Pink skies above In a week, all was gone By winter sun It started with a week in the Welsh countryside. In a cottage overlooking the ruins of a medieval castle. With daily walks through historical sites - hill forts, cathedrals and graveyards. So it should be no surprise that The Haunted Life of Architecture emerged - a psychedelic pop trip through the fears and regrets of an overactive mind. Amateur Ornithologist challenged themselves to craft their most ambitious album to date - creating a rich synthesis of pop and orchestral sounds, experimenting with song structures, and confronting core themes of memory, legacy and fear. This uncanny sensation is conjured by the mixed media cover, featuring a collage by geographer and artist Michael Jeffries - an anonymous double-garage home sits atop “cup-and-ring” carved stone monuments, framed by brushed cotton and complete with Computer Age font. The piece asks what histories - both real and imaginary - our world is built atop. Daniel Clifford - vocals Maddie Smyth - viola, vocals Chris Perriman - bass Marianne Kell - cello Giovanni Onofri - guitar Dan Humble - drums, percussion Rick Matthews - keys Nick Pierce - violin Abigail Brierley - trumpet Cover by Mike Jeffries with Daniel Clifford and Chris Perriman Produced by Daniel Clifford and Harbourmaster.
