Threadworms, also known as Pinworms, are common cause of abdominal pain in children, as well as itchy bottoms and itchy genitals. They can also cause restlessness, vomiting, and even pain when passing urine. Threadworms can be transmitted via the faecal-oral route , which is when a child touches a dirty object such as a shared toy in class, shared towels at home, stroking animal fur or using the toilet without washing their hands. They then proceed to pick up food with the same hands or put their hands in their mouth leading to eggs being ingested into the gut. These eggs then stay in the bowel, and hatch to release worms which then multiply and cause symptoms. They can sometimes be seen in the faeces or stool of the infected child. How To get rid of Pinworms (Threadworms) Threadworms treatment is by using Vermox or Mebendazole 5ml dose and then repeating the dose in 2 weeks. This is usually because mebendazole gets rid of the threadworms but does not kill the eggs which can hatch within that 2 weeks period. It's also advised to treat all household contact even if they do not have symptoms as you can buy ovex, as a family pack treatment over the counter. How to prevent Threadworms You can prevent threadworms by practising hygiene measures such as: washing hands and fingernails regularly, before and after meals, washing all sleepwear, bed linen, towels and soft toys, thorough and repeated vacuuming, repeated damp-dusting of all surfaces, keeping nails short and discouraging thumb sucking and nail biting.
