Itihasa has connotations of a timeless history, chronologically written description of important, special and public sector events of the person, society, country, chronological analysis of facts and events. Itihasa means 'This is indeed what happened'. Itihasa came to be applied to the Ramayan, the Mahabharata and the Puranas which are part of our culture and history. Bibek Debroy, renowned Sanskrit scholar and economist, reveals the profound hidden knowledge within ancient Indian texts that's rapidly disappearing from our collective memory. With 95% of India's 40 million ancient manuscripts still untranslated, we're losing access to incredible wisdom on governance, economics, philosophy, and human behavior. In this eye-opening talk from Sangam Talks, Debroy explores: Why the Ramayana and Mahabharata are encyclopedias of knowledge, not just stories How ancient Sanskrit contains advanced economic theories predating modern economics by thousands of years The 50-year project to create the definitive version of the Mahabharata Why only understanding unabridged translations reveals the true depth of these texts The surprising liberal attitudes toward relationships and gender in ancient India About speaker: Bibek Debroy is an economist and was educated in Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur; Presidency College, Kolkata; Delhi School of Economics and Trinity College, Cambridge.
