Concerto for Alto Saxophone by Alexander Glazunov Brayden Gilliam - Alto Saxophone Mrs. Lousia Peng - Piano "Showcase of Standards" - Undergraduate Saxophone Recital Access the program with the link below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mY_8... Program Notes for "Concerto for Alto Saxophone": Renowned for his “Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra, Op. 109”, Alexander Glazunov composed this work at the continuous urging of virtuoso Sigurd Rascher, who gave a premiere performance in 1934. Written as a single continuous movement divided into three sections, the concerto features frequent contrasts and fluctuations of tempo, the concerto allows for much interpretive freedom of the soloist. Inspired by the economic and political changes in Russia during World War I, many compositional techniques can be heard that are reminiscent of his home country. The first section features three repeated concert F pitches -- ringing out to resemble bells in the town where he grew up. Additionally, three playful sequences simulate his childhood innocence with a lighthearted and animated characteristic. The grandiose opening theme is referenced at the beginning of the second section, modulating and evoking a more mysterious solemn emotion, suggesting Glazunov’s grief for the changes in his country. The third section gradually makes its way back to the home key with a lively tone, suggesting hopefulness for the future of Russia. Because of the autobiographical nature of the piece, Glazunov’s concerto has become a cherished piece in saxophone repertoire.
