Vizhinjam International Seaport is redefining India’s role in global container transshipment by combining deep natural draft, proximity to international shipping lanes, and phased capacity expansion. With Phase-1 operational since December 3, 2024, the port positions India closer to direct control over container routing that was earlier handled at foreign hubs. The port offers a natural draft of 18–20 meters and sits just 10 nautical miles from the main east-west shipping corridor, enabling Ultra Large Container Vessels to berth without extensive dredging. Phase-1 is designed for 1 million TEUs annually and has already handled volumes beyond its initial design. Phase-2 construction began on January 24, 2026, with plans to extend berth length from 800 meters to 2,000 meters and scale capacity toward 5.7 million TEUs by 2029. Strategically, Vizhinjam is less about size and more about reducing dependence, improving supply-chain resilience, and reshaping how trade routes are managed from Indian shores.
