We are on a journey around the Malaysian Peninsular in search of the culture and history of the place. So please subscribe to the channel, ring the notification bell, and share as widely as possible. Malaysia deserves to be better known on the world stage, and given how excellently it has handled the current pandemic, it is obvious that Malaysia has reserves of common sense lacking in some other countries, mentioning no names. As an additional bonus, you can also find further information about our journey from the blogs we have written over at www.lawrencegray.com and www.helengray.com. You can also follow us on FaceBook at facebook.com/lawrenceandhelen Our journey around the peninsular takes us to many points of interest and we made a point of going to the local museums, some of which were very good, and some of which needed a lot of work! But we do recommend that you go exploring these places as by doing so your experience of Malaysia will be much enhanced. On this journey we only hit one beach resort, but of course, Malaysia is renowned for such resorts as Langkawi and Kota Kinabulu. It is also known for its national parks, which are spectacular. But of those days that you want a change from sitting on the beach in the scorching sun, take a trip to some of the historical sites and get the imagination working. This is a nation created by pirates, Sultans, conquistadors and warring Chinese secret societies and there are many exciting stories to learn. Although what lays before you may be hard to recognise, it is a thrill to find some of the historical landmarks of moments that built up the national character. I recommend that you watch The Hidden History of Johor Lama, which will give you a good over view of the history of Johor, which shares many points of contact with other states in Malaysia. In the meantimes, here's a quick run down of the basic story of Peninsular Malaysia: ancient man gives way to hunter gatherer groups who then mingle with various sea faring groups related to polynesians among others. Then Hinduism and Buddhism from India finds their way in through the trading posts around the coast. Various enclaves of settlement grow up, become tributaries of the Chinese Empire, and then the Srivajayans of Sumatra and then the Majapahit of Java a little later. These two vie for power over the region. Siam also enters into the fray and China is still around making its presence felt until the Ming withdraw from overseas ventures. Then the influence of Islam grows and Terengganu lays claim to being the first state to accept it. Melaka though becomes a powerful Sultanate and dominates the region until the Portuguese turn up and shatter its power. As the Melakan empire disintegrates in the face of colonial pressures, the Acehnese of Sumatra, and the Siamese vie for power. Then enter into this the Dutch and the British. The north of the peninsular comes under Siamese domination, and the British use this to offer protection to various Malay states. It is not until the twentieth Century that the British take control of the northern states under Siamese suzerainty. Then come the Japanese and the rest is, as they say, history!
