The wooden mini camper with which Anne Willmes is traveling in the north-west of Lower Saxony is often called "Knutschkugel". It starts in Dangast on the Jade Bay, where the spa park and campsite are right by the sea. Then it's 30 kilometers south to Ammerland, which is famous for its rhododendron cultivation - and for a large number of tree nurseries. 00:00:00 Greeting 00:05:30 Arrival at a campsite near Dangast 00:13:10 Art and culture in the Kurpark 00:22:27 water sports on Lake Nethen 00:31:35 Sailing on the Zwischenahner Meer - the pearl of the Ammerland 00:44:16 Small town idyll in Westerstede 00:49:50 The Hobbie family's rhododendron splendor 00:57:48 Excursion in the dragon boat 01:13:24 The green splendor of the nurseries 01:18:59 Camping at the medicinal herb labyrinth garden 01:27:28 Farewell She discovers a farm with a field of strawberries to pick yourself and a crazy amusement park. On the way she buys sweets in a historic corner shop, potatoes from the vending machine and smoked Ammerland eel. She cycles around the Zwischenahner Meer and introduces the open-air museum on the shore of the inland lake, finds a medicinal herb labyrinth in the forest and learns how Duz-Platz in Westerstede got its name. She conquers the Aper Tief nature reserve, the only freshwater mudflat in the north-west, in a dragon boat. The Ammerland is located in the northwest of Lower Saxony. The region is criss-crossed by moorland, river meadows and park landscapes. One plant is particularly common there – the rhododendron. Around 85 percent of German rhododendron plants are produced in Ammerland. That's why you see them everywhere here. More than 1,000 different varieties bloom in private and professional gardens. The flowering period of the rhododendron is from the end of April to the end of June. That's why a holiday during this time is particularly attractive. The Jade Bay is a large bay that was created in the Middle Ages by large storm surges. It lies between the Weser and Ems estuaries. It used to be mostly a raised bog. The Jade Bay is part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. In 2009 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The national park offers protection for many bird and plant species.
