Don't Get Screwed! | 6 Credit Exclusion Rule

Learn from my mistakes! In this video I tell my story of how I ended up with a $12,000 bill from the VA after withdrawing from my semester using the GI Bill. After paying out of pocket at a community college, I transferred to a four year university to complete my degree in Mechanical Engineering. I learned after I transferred that I would have to complete 3 years of course overloading in order to graduate, despite already having been in school for 2.5 years. I decided I did not want to be a mechanical engineer bad enough to stick this through. All I wanted was to return to work. I found a way to get a BS in only 9 months and complete it online while preserving my GI Bill. After making the decision on my own to drop my calc 3 course, I later went to my VA representative to learn what it would cost me to drop the rest of my courses. I was notified that it would cost me $2,000 to withdraw. To me, this was worth it. I decided to move forward with withdrawing and enroll in a new program. To my surprise, I received a debt letter in the mail a few months later for the amount of $12,000. The issue that was not brought to light until it was too late was the reality of the 6 credit exclusion rule. I did not know about this rule beforehand, but learned this is a one time opportunity for veterans to withdraw from courses with minimal repercussions. Unfortunately, that rule was applied when I dropped the single course and not when I dropped the larger portions of my course load. This was the case despite the one course causing no debt. ☎️ FOLLOW MILITARY BOTTOM LINE ON INSTAGRAM:   / militarybottomline   ☎️FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM:   / jasonburds   ⚠️⚠️⚠️ AFFILIATE LINKS* ⚠️⚠️⚠️ 🤑FREE MONEY when you sign up using my links 💰Robinhood: https://join.robinhood.com/jasonb7778 💰Webull: https://act.webull.com/ni/UcdDIMjfgeq... 💰Get FREE Bitcoin when you buy or sell $100 of Crypto https://www.coinbase.com/join/burds_w3 🔴 GEAR I USE 🔴 🎥 Camera - Canon M50 - https://amzn.to/3ek15zb (not currently used for podcasts) 🎙️ Microphone - Rode PodMic Microphone - https://amzn.to/3H5iU1w 🎧 Headphones - ISK HP2000 - https://amzn.to/3phJjD8 🎚️ Sound Mixer - RodeCaster Pro - https://amzn.to/30QP3dA 💾 Storage - 128GB SD Card - https://amzn.to/3FrkvhC 💾 Storage - External Hardrive - https://amzn.to/3ekMiV7 💡Lighting - Ring Light - https://amzn.to/30Qt4n1 💎 Sound Foam - https://amzn.to/32vPfiL 🎬 MY TOP VIDEOS 🎬 Post 9/11 GI Bill | The Do's and Don'ts -    • Post 9/11 GI Bill | The Do's and Don'...   5 Unique Ways to Use Your GI Bill -    • 5 Unique Ways to Use Your GI Bill in ...   Ep. 37 - National Guard Special Forces -    • Jamie Grant - National Guard Special ...   ⚠️⚠️⚠️ DISCLAIMERS ⚠️⚠️⚠️ *Some of the links on this page are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I may earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase and/or subscribe. **Any opinions shared on this channel are that of my own and do not represent the opinions of the DoD or any US military branch. How the VA explains the 6 credit exclusion rule: " VA automatically grants mitigating circumstances for up to 6 credits the first time a student reduces or terminates and mitigating circumstances must be considered. This automatic grant is called the 6-Credit Hour Exclusion. The exclusion is a one-time grant made the first-time mitigating circumstances must be considered for the student. Up to 6 credits can be excluded if the student has been awarded benefits for the credit. The 6-Credit Hour Exclusion cannot be granted if the student completes the term and receives non-punitive grades. If the student withdraws from 3 credits, the exclusion will be granted for 3 credits and the student’s one-time exclusion is used. If the student withdraws from 12 credits, the exclusion will be granted for 6 credits, the student’s one-time exclusion is used, and the student must provide mitigating circumstances for the other 6 credits. " This is my warning to you. Learn from my mistake. If you're thinking about withdrawing from any courses, do you homework before dropping ANY and make sure you don't incur unnecessary debt.
