Trooper Catches Two Guys Racing Both Get Pulled Over But One Car Takes Off When Trooper Smells Weed

On 11/27/2025, while conducting patrol on Interstate 57, I observed a black passenger car and a white pickup truck traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. Using my radar unit, I confirmed both vehicles were traveling approximately 100 mph in a posted 75-mph zone. I initiated a traffic stop on both vehicles. Vehicle 1 (V1) – White Pickup Truck / Driver: Subject 1 I first approached the white pickup truck (V1). I identified myself to the driver, hereby referred to as Subject 1, and informed him of the reason for the stop. I requested his driver’s license and vehicle registration. After obtaining the information, I proceeded to contact the second vehicle involved in the stop. Vehicle 2 (V2) – Black Passenger Car / Driver: Subject 2 I approached the black passenger vehicle (V2). The driver, hereby referred to as Subject 2, cracked his window only slightly. I identified myself, explained the reason for the stop, and immediately read him his Miranda rights due to a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle’s interior. I requested Subject 2’s driver’s license and vehicle registration and returned to my patrol unit to conduct ACIC/NCIC checks on both drivers. Disposition of Subject 1 Subject 1 was cited for Speeding – 100 mph in a 75-mph zone. He was released on his own recognizance without further incident. Incident Involving Subject 2 After V1 departed the area, I re-approached Subject 2 and instructed him to exit the vehicle to conduct a probable-cause search based on the odor of marijuana detected earlier. Subject 2 refused to comply with verbal commands and fled the scene in V2. Pursuit Details: I initiated a vehicle pursuit northbound on Interstate 57. Radar confirmed V2 reaching speeds of approximately 130 mph. Subject 2 drove recklessly, passing vehicles and making unsafe lane changes over a distance of approximately four miles. Once I closed distance with V2, I executed a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) by making contact with the right front of my patrol vehicle against the left rear quarter panel of V2. The maneuver caused V2 to spin counter-clockwise and collide with the guardrail near the 55-mile marker northbound. A Bald Knob Police Department unit arrived on scene, and we conducted a felony stop on Subject 2. Subject 2 was taken into custody without further incident. Guardrail Damages: During the TVI, the guardrail received approximately $500 worth of damage from V2.
