Wide of news conference STORYLINE: British Defence Secretary Des Browne stressed on Monday that the new security plan in Iraq will leave no place for militias and all areas that harbour insurgents will not be able to continue as hideouts. Browne was speaking following talks with the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in Baghdad. He said that the security of Baghdad was a challenge not only for the people of the capital but for the country as a whole. He noted however that Iraq must take the lead. "It's important that all of our efforts in going to make the said plan succeed. But it is also important that it is an Iraqi lead" said the British Defence Secretary. Browne said after the talks that this was his fourth visit to Iraq and he sees "continuous improvement in the performance of the government and its abilities to achieve what Iraqi people look for," according to a statement released by the prime minister's office. The statement said the two officials discussed the transfer of security to Iraqi forces in Basra, where thousands of British troops are based. They also discussed the role British forces could play after Iraqis take charge of security in the southern province, it added. Britain has about seven thousand soldiers in Iraq, the largest troop contingent among the US allies, based in the southern province of Maysan and Basra. It is planning to withdraw a large portion of them this year.
