They are still sidelined in the "hurry up and wait" mode, stuck in a political ping-pong stalemate where they were called to establish a peace that evades the LAPD; still smarting from the horror of watching looters decimate Fairfax, Melrose, and The Grove last week, the local police force has been anything but friendly in their treatment of the peaceful protesters, arrested and cited daily for curfew violations as part of their civil disobedience strategy to obtain justice for George Floyd. While there is progress on the George Floyd Minnesota prosecution front, the animosity between local police and protesters is clearly seething with long-held resentments. UPDATE Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced today that newly available evidence received from the medical examiner has resulted in new charges against the four perpetrators involved in the murder of George Floyd at 38th & Chicago in Minneapolis on 5.25.2020. In an amended complaint, MPD officer Derek Chauvin is now being charged with second-degree murder; the original third-degree (unintentional) murder and manslaughter charges still remain viable as well. J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao, all of whom - like Chauvin - were fired from the MPD last week, are being charged with aiding and abetting murder in the second degree, a felony offense. "It's very clear that the assault - which ended up being a murder - was aided and abetted by these officers in many ways... by watching, by failing to render aid, there were a number of multiple failures ... and the facts we have been gathering support [additional] charges. ...We're continuing to investigate; we're continuing to gather information." A parallel federal color of law investigation is also currently underway. Meanwhile, the National Guard is made to sit on the fence - watch and wait as the days grow hotter and the political rhetoric bogs down like a swayback horse.
