Krasnoilsk Malanka. The revival of the carnival · Ukraїner
Bukovyna is considered to be a region that preserved old customs of Christmas holidays celebration better than anywhere else in Ukraine. Unique Malanka, or as local people call it "pereberiya" (masquerade), takes place in the town of Vashkivtsi, in the villages of Krasnoilsk, Velykyi Kuchuriv, Boyan, Prypruttia, Babyn and others. This tradition resulted in holding an annual folk-ethnic festival "Malanka-fest" in Chernivtsi since 2011. Every year, on the 15th of January, dozens of folk ensembles come with their original performances to compete in their creativity. The biggest and most famous Malanka in Bukovyna takes place in the village of Krasnoilsk, on the border with Romania. On the 13th and 14th of January, thousands of people in creative costumes come to the streets of their village with performances, songs, and dances, celebrating this way the Old New Year (New Year's Eve according to the Julian calendar, still in use by the Orthodox Church after the calendar change in 1918). The Malanka tradition was preserved here despite soviet authorities ban of this celebration and nowadays thousands of tourists not just from Ukraine but from all over the world come to experience this tradition.
