Placing your potted Japanese Maple in a larger pot has several advantages, firstly to help stop your potted tree blowing over in windy weather. To also help with decoration, a lot of people don't like the plastic pots a Japanese Maple comes in, and rush to repot into a more pleasing decirative pot, especially when they have just purchased a new tree, which has probably only just been repotted by the nursery weeks before going on sale, which results in the tree being repotted twice in a short space of time, doubling the stress the tree has already had, as well the tree having to contend with new watering regimes, natural weather conditions etc, which the tree has possibly not faced before away from the protection of polytunnels in the nursery. Plus it makes repotting easier in future, than it would be trying, to get a tree that may be a bit pot bound out of a sloped decorative pot compared to the thin plastic pots, easier to cut the plastic pot, than smash a decorative pot or damage rootballs. A special Thankyou to Mark, my mentor who has shared his many years of Japanese Maple experience, who's valuable expert advice is helping so many people around the world, who are keen to learn the best way to care for Japanese Maples.
