Why Scheduled Tribes Should Be Officially Declared As Hindus | No Reservation On Changing Religion?

Nishikant Dubey, Member of Parliament from Jharkhand’s Godda constituency, raised a very important point on Tuesday (22 September). He demanded that any member of the Scheduled Tribes (STs) who changes his religion should be debarred from availing benefits of reservation, as is the case with the people belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs). There is no doubt that STs are nothing but Hindus. Most of these communities were part of the mainstream Hindu society but were pushed to take refuge in forests during the period of Islamic invasions. Article 342 of the constitution empowers the President of India “to specify the castes, races or tribes or parts of or groups within castes, races or tribes which shall for the purposes of this Constitution be deemed to be Scheduled Tribes in relation to that State or Union territory, as the case may be” after consulting with Governors of the states where these communities are located. And that too via a simple public notification. So, all that Modi government needs to do is, to convince President Ram Nath Kovind to issue a notification “The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 2020” stating that “no person who professes a religion different from Hinduism shall be deemed to be a member of the Scheduled Tribes.” This is necessary not just to fight conversions of tribals but also to proudly establish the fact that Tribals are an integral part of Hindu society and their reservation benefits are a byproduct of having that very identity.
