REGISTER TODAY: https://heart2heartcpr.com - Learn how to recognize and treat burns of various severity. A burn is a specific type of soft tissue injury caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, or radiation. Burns can result in swelling and breathing problems, particularly if they occur around the face or throat. They are susceptible to infection, and severe burns can lead to shock. Burns are classified based on their depth and severity into three categories: first degree, second degree, and third degree. A first-degree burn damages only the top layer of skin, characterized by dry, pink or red skin, slight swelling, tenderness, and intense pain in the area. A second-degree burn affects both layers of the skin, with raw and moist burn skin ranging from white to red. Blisters may be present, which can be open and leaking clear fluid, and there is severe pain. A third-degree burn damages both layers of the skin, underlying tissues, bone, blood vessels, fat, and muscle. The skin appears dry, leathery, and may be charred black or white. Nerve damage can lead to a lack of pain sensation. It is necessary to call emergency medical services (EMS) in certain burn situations. This includes burns causing serious tissue damage, severe bleeding that may lead to shock, burns resulting from electricity, chemicals, or explosions, burns covering a large area of the body, burns around the airway causing breathing difficulties, burns in individuals with serious medical conditions or aged below 50 or above 50, burns exposed to potentially infectious material, and burns causing severe swelling that may cut off circulation. For superficial burns, the first aid involves cooling the burn with water until the pain subsides, typically requiring 10 to 15 minutes of continuous cooling. Afterward, applying an antibiotic ointment recommended by a pharmacist and covering the burn with a dry, non-stick sterile dressing can help prevent infection. For partial and full-thickness burns, immersing the burnt area in cool water until the pain stops is advised. If immersion is not possible, covering the burn with a cool, moist sterile dressing or clean cloth is recommended. After cooling, the area should be covered with dry non-stick sterile dressings to maintain a sterile environment and prevent infection.
